Funk

I’ve been in a funk.  A blue mood.  Full of conflicting emotions and realities and perspectives and worries and attitudes past and present.  All my most prized and hard won beliefs have been parading past me like a gay pride march, colourful flags billowing, sequins body suits sparkling, signs and symbols of lessons learnt emblazoned onto brightly painted placards.  Or sneaking into our bedroom at night, slipping between sleeping babies to kiss me on the cheek and remind me of their worthiness.  And all the doubts associated with the getting of my beliefs have been re-animated as ghosts………did I really get it ‘right’?  Did I really stretch and tease and pull apart my beliefs and iron out all the wrinkles?

Sitting with babies and cleaning their messes and feeding them food, BIG THOUGHTS come and dance a whirly gig in my head.  HOW AM I GONNA CHANGE THE WORLD? thoughts, and WHAT DIFFERENCE CAN I MAKE? thoughts play intricate games of chess with my mind.  And when they go quiet, the seductive pull of self doubt and feelings of aging come sneaking round.  Why do I think it really matters what I think, when I witness the enormity of the universe, and entrenched beliefs around me, and that great wheel of life that never stops it’s grinding procession?  Who am I really, but another aging hippy trying desperately to hang onto the vitality of youth?
I guess it all started with the business course.  Determined to carve us an income from our lifestyle, I launched into an ecourse feet first.  And landed heavily on the glass shards and needles of my attitudes and life experiences around the monetary drive that I’ve periodically ignored and explored throughout my lifetime.  The justifications I’ve used to pursue it, and the rationalisations about how I’d use it better than I’ve seen.  My lust and disgust for it.   And then my last post ‘money’ galloped out of the wings, trumpeting wildly about the beauty of the places where money isn’t, and placing it in the hall of mirrors where I nearly always end up.  Me, and my unique spark of the universe that I carry with me wherever I go, nearly always end up sitting on the floor in a vast reflective cavern, where I see my spark mirrored there, and there, and there, glinting and crackling along with all the other sparks, that contain every spark within them.  My drop of the ocean that remembers where it’s been.
When the dust settled on my introspection about money, I came to realise that my dreams of having money almost always end up in some kind of “We’ll buy our farm and close our gates and set up our own private heaven, and the world can just pass us by” fantasy.  I think our lack of money keeps us far more real.  And sociable and interacting.  When it comes it will be perfect though, and we’ll know how to deal with it.
Then we were sitting at home one morning, facing another day of feeding babies/cleaning babies/entertaining babies/cleaning up after babies, and the call came to action!  We tumbled into the van, oranges and nappies flying, and we swooped off to a nearby town where Metagasco was digging a pond to hold toxic water, the ‘waste product’ of the system of gas fracking.  One of 5 ponds in this town close by, that are shallow, and leaking, on a floodplain in a regularly flooded area, that is totally fertile and growing food.  Coming from 9 wells that are operational, only 2 of which that are working, quietly humming away in this town so near where we live.  We were gutted.  And elated to meet so many disparate folk coming together and forming community around protecting the land.  And devastated when we looked at the reality of this unsigned pond in front of us, leeching poisons into the waterways.  And delighted to passionately speak to the man who was making a movie about CSG.  “Just wait a minute, I know this is going to be profound and I want to be filming it” he said, when I came up to him to tell him one last thing.  Lilly found spiders that were the same but different on tall grass seeds, and he filmed her reverently observing them, exclaiming over their beauty.  And we were sick to our stomachs as we watched this pond in our backyard…….I thought it was only happening in Queensland!  And they’re MINING THE KIMBERLEY’S!!!!!  The only environment on the planet where there’s no record of anything having gone extinct!!  They’re stealing our planet, and our children’s future, and ‘they’ve’ got to be STOPPED!!
And our activist clothing came snaking out of our closets, settling on our skins and in our minds so easily, so neatly.  Our old bedfellows of righteous indignation, and wrath for the despoilers of the planet snuck into our bed that night.  Squeezed between me and Currawong and Zarrathustra, leaving the head lice of the countless wars waged by ‘them’ on our pillows.  Keeping us warm with all the ideas we were hatching, for saving the world.  We spent years being passionate advocates and activists.  Once you start to open the book titled ‘Humanities damage to the planet’, carcasses spill out readily, and atrocities bleed through the pages.  Where do you stop? How can you choose which is worse than the other? A mind numbing litany of heartless cruelties heaped onto refugee’s, indigenous clans, wild landscapes, ancient artworks, millions of other species, waterways, oceans, forests, biosphere…….you know how long this list is.  It’s an overwhelming and despairing list.  That can hurtle you to burnout quicker than a shuttle.  But fuck ‘The Secret’ with that whole concept of Mother Theresa not going to anti-war rallies, but only peace marches, and how what you focus on grows!  Protest is powerful and productive, just look at Iceland, and Ghandi, and Protestors Falls, and the Franklin Dam, and all the other amazing things that have happened.
Our old clothes fit us so well, that we wore them for days, and were having passionate discussions and feeling heavy thoughts on our shoulders as we sat with babies and sheparded them outside.  As a brief interlude one night, we sat watching photos and videos of our journey to our new home.  Marvelled at how beautiful and nostalgic our trip has become in hindsight.  Now that we know it all turned out okay, I can look at the worry lines on my brow and laugh, knowing that I had nothing to worry bout.  I could have just enjoyed the ride.
So we went to bed that night, in a bubble of remembering that the very best thing we can do with our lives is to smile, and love, and create beauty and inspiration.  But in the morning our heavy clothes had snuck back on.  “How could they mine the Kimberley’s”, and “How many billions of dollars do they need?”, and “What can we do?”, and “Don’t they have children?”……………..  “They” started dancing over there in a place where I could get them in my sights and SHOOT THE BASTARDS cause they didn’t deserve to dance on mother earth with me and Currawong and my precious babies and you and all the other peaceful people on the planet with love in their hearts.  We felt remembered and real aches and griefs and deep down sorrows about all the destruction our species has wrought.
Currawong went to visit a smiling wise hermit on the hill behind us, swapped shorthand stories of deep and yearning places, as you can learn to do when you’ve a mountain of children that hug the toes of every interaction, and he came home crying.  “Surrender!” he cried.  “It’s all about surrender.  I can’t hate, and attack, and pursue loggerheads with this world………….because it’s all me.”  It felt for me like a light had been chiselled, and then all of a sudden warmth wrapped me, and with it came instant peace.  Like a bulldozer had just dumped a load of remembered perceptions and lessons on my head that crackled through my system.   We brainstormed and swapped quick flashes of realisation, and it all tumbled out of him like sour tasting words that he knew were true for him nonetheless.  “Of course that waste water pond has been built badly, cause that supplies a need for the clean up team, who then require a holding team for when the ponds overflow and need pumping out and holding till later, which provides work for another team, and it’s all interconnected and perfectly interactive cause it reflects the way evolution works, and the millions of fine tuned balances that keep our world spinning.  Every single thing reflects everything else in it’s complexity and interconnectedness.  From fast food chains, to enormous corporations, to the Kimberley’s, to our governments…….. Of course it works so well, because it’s reflecting the brilliance of the universe!”
Microcosm of the macrocosm.
And he’s right.  And it’s interesting to note that 12 years ago when we were settling into our first nest together, we both remember an argument/debate we had that lasted all day.  From the pub, over the bridge, through dinner, and into bed, where early in the morning we had to agree to disagree – He thought (r)evolution could only come from changing the system till it filtered to the individual, and I argued it had to change in the human till it filtered to the system – and realised we were arguing the same thing from different angles, and finally got some sleep.  And another one I said when we met absolutely infuriated him.  I told him he had to stop hating George Bush, cause he WAS George Bush, and that argument lasted years.  Later during our market years, I dropped many a jaw, when I said that George Bush was one of the greatest environmentalists ever.  Think about it.  The man lives in a five star rated environmentally friendly and energy self sufficient home, and has galvanised more people into environmental and political action since Ghandi, and was definitely a harbringer of many people realising that their governments weren’t to be trusted.  I can just imagine him sitting in his rainbow dyed t-shirt hashing over his plan with a friend, “So if I turn into a complete knob, get dad to make me president, and destroy the environment, take my country to war, blow up the twin towers, start a war on terrorism to destroy individuals freedoms, and come across as barely sentient and monosyllabic, then I’ll galvanise a huge amount of sleeping dreamers to wake the fuck up and get in control of their insides and this runaway train we’re on!!”  But I digress…..
So after Currawong’s passionate moment of clarity and realising it was all about surrender, and all a reflection of him………..all these little lessons that I’ve learnt along the way came out of the wings in their slightly bedraggled tutu’s, pirouetting remember songs in my head.  The first time, sitting in the sun on my sister’s lawn in Bathurst, when I really got that love and hate could co-exist.  And were indeed the same thing.  I hated my stepfather and what he’d done to me and my family, yet I loved the special attention I got, and how he was careful with my sensitivity.  While I was trying to settle on whether I really did love or hate him I was in a quandary.  When I accepted I could do both at the same time, I was peaceful.
All those times I thought to myself as a young thing “Why does she have so many children if she can’t be nice to them?” And I’ve since learnt exactly how she might have been grumpy.  “Why doesn’t she just keep that child quiet?” And I’ve learnt how you can be in a situation where there’s nothing you can do to stop a baby having a tantrum.  “How can she smoke when there’s babies around?”  You guessed it.  I know how that can happen too.  “How can they be so nice and together, and then go and do something like THAT?”  I’ve done things that people would think such things about.   "How can women have caesareans?"  I got that one too.  “Why does she say all that, and then go and do the opposite thing?”  Yup.  Been there too.  In fact just about every time I’ve said “How can they/she/he” do ANYTHING………I’ve been totally destined and fated from that moment to have a life experience that will show me exactly how.
I started noticing that every time I had a falling out with someone, they would say exactly the same things about me, as I was complaining about them.  After observing and listening and learning for years, I realised that every human being was capable of every single thing under the sun…..including me……given the right circumstances.
Maybe I was more fine tuned to the ‘darker’ side of life from my childhood and my family and the stories that pulled me and made me feel.  Maybe it was leaving my childhood religion and knowing that I had to re-educate myself and that I knew nothing.  Maybe I just have a deep place inside me that’s never forgot how dark I can be throughout my many incarnations.  I was reading a poem about the witches that were burnt one day, and felt in detail my fingernails being pulled off one by one.  I’ve heard loathsome and fearsome and disgusting stories of human depravity, and I’ve hunkered down and cringed…….but I’ve never been surprised.  It’s always been recognisable.
I’ve sat with murderers, and businessmen, and rapists, and clergy, and paedophiles, and politicians, and dominatrix’s, and doctors, and prostitutes, and psychologists, and drug dealers, and fundamentalists, and bikers, and police officers, and just about anyone else that might have graced the likes of Australia’s Most Wanted, and seen myself.  Connected with them, not as a judge, or a do gooder, or trying to hide a sensationalised voyeur…….but as an equal.  And been honoured and privileged that they also showed me all their beauty, and fragility, and sensitive hurtness.  Their inhumanity and humanity all together and intermingled.  Not separated into the polite and nice boxes that we often like to keep ourselves in.
And I’ve got a doozy of a lesson that I’ve been wanting to tell you about for a while now, and here’s where it belongs.  I’m a survivor of incest.  I had body memories and flashbacks when I was 24.  And went through all sorts of groups and books and modalities of healing to try and make peace with it.  Now nicely packaged along with sexual abuse, often comes weird arse sexual fantasies.  Where a person can fantasise about rape, and feel totally fucked up and despicable because of it.  Sure that if anyone ever knew what went on in their head, they’d be hated and avoided forevermore.  Obviously that person was me.  Many moons ago when Currawong and I were still in the flush of new love, we set our feet on the path of honesty, and gently showed each other our scars and deep wounds.  And loved and accepted each other despite them.  In this climate of acceptance I was running a well known fantasy in my head, with me as the abused.  And decided to switch perspectives and become the abuser to see what happened.  And got off on it.
In that moment I knew that I could abuse.  Given the right situation, and provocation, I could.  I understood my abusers and how they could hurt me.  I realised they were enacting what had happened to them.  And in meeting this strange and unloved part of me, I knew I could accept it as  me, and would never be so removed and in denial of it, that it could hijack me into doing something I wouldn’t choose in a loving space.  Now I’m not saying this is the cure for incest, but this is what worked for me.
And another thing happened.  If I could learn such heart stretching deeps and compassions and love from these parts of me that I saw reflected in others……………….then how could I say it was wrong and bad?  How could I apportion judgement and blame onto anyone or anything?  If they were all potential experiences and lessons that could bring about so much acceptance, learning and love?
When Currawong and I finally got together, he was such an enigmatic and angry bastard, and had convinced himself through numerous situations that he was unlovable, that he was Faust.  And I was fresh from healing my hurts, and learning mammoth lessons, channelling the amazing book I wrote after meeting him, and in the prime of living in the moment, and seeing absolutely everything and everyone around me as perfect and me.  And lots of things happened between us that many folk would have found abusive, and he certainly was expecting me to throw accusations at him, but all I could see was another fear faced, and another lesson learnt, and how perfect he was to get to all those hard to see places where my fears had taken refuge.  I’d been through the desert on my Saturn Return initiation, and faced my fear of the dark, of being alone, of the unknown, of the heat, of the desert, of men, of so many things, but I hadn’t ever lost my sight, or my glasses, which I did when he stomped on them during a wild new years eve party at the end of 1999.  That was a deep fear and hidden hurt I’d had since 6th class that I didn’t even know was there.  I tripped him out when I thanked him.   And when I was dragging him by the hair off the property after he went psycho during an argument, I realised in one crystal moment, that no matter how far I was pushed, and how angry I got, I would never kill someone.  Which was always a fear at the back of my mind, once I realised I had a volcanoe inside me from all my stored anger and repression as a child.  I thanked him for that one too.  And he got that one as well.
I also realised years down the track that all the time I thought I was ‘healing’ Currawong, we were actually healing each other, and we both needed that time to learn how to let love in.   And that process has scaled all of our secrets, and all our dark bits, and all our hidden selves.  They all get accepted, and all get loved eventually.  Unconditional love can wreak miracles.  I’ve experienced it over and over again.
So back to the story again, all this stuff was bubbling and boiling in the background, and I sat on facebook one day and used it as the oracle it is.  Threw out my nets to my friendship web and peered at what the deeps brought me.  And there was a theme that set me rattling off into stories and memories again.  And all my recent experiences, and our passionate discussions and revelations kinda swirled around the links that I stumbled on and  they all coalesced...........

And here’s my point, that we’ve been walking towards here, and that you knew I was going to make.  Our western world in particular is so dedicated to our ‘godliness’.  Our ‘goodness’, and ‘white light’ and ‘pureness’ and ‘love’, and we’re so convinced that following the rules and doing the ‘right’ thing will lead to an eventual reward, that we’re all neglecting our shadow selves.  Our dark.  Our deep.  Our dead.  It’s like we’re all walking through life with these blinkers on, where we can only see the parts that we collectively sanction as ‘true’ and ‘right’, while behind those blinkers, in our collective blind spots, our shadow selves are twiddling their thumbs, and getting a bit bored, and making us act like puppets on strings cause we refuse to acknowledge they’re there.  We send them to ‘those’ people who are evil, and ‘they’ over there who do things that we just can’t understand, and have set all our dark selves loose on the world through our neglect to acknowledge and learn from and love them.
And they’ve proliferated and thrived in the compost of our dirt that we refuse to own.  “I’m good, and I’m kind, and I love everyone, and if only you’d do the right thing, you too could be happy like me!” we proudly proclaim to the world, whilst our shadows are knifing each other in the background.  We’ve left all our nasty baggage on that great carousel, and they’ve slowly spread their hidden power to the neighbours.  They’ve run off to the Wizard of Oz, to make that Great Wizard even greater and nastier while the little man pulling the levers has been hiding himself from himself.  They’re snaffling schnapps in the boardrooms of the great corporations that are eating our world.  They’re metagasco making toxic wastewater dams on floodplains.  They’re dancing as the puppeteers behind every tradgedy and sin.
And it’s time that we claimed them.  Owned them.  Loved them.  Learnt from them.  Sewed them back into our souls like Wendy did for Peter Pan’s shadow.  Let them blend with our white, and create lots of greys, and fine tune our pure, and add depth and dimension to our love.  When we pick up our dark children from childcare, and bring them home to ourselves, there will be no more room or energy for ‘those’ people to wreak such havoc in our world.  No more will we be able to hurt and harm our skin the earth, and our internal landscapes that we’ve endeavoured to domesticate will return to harmony, and a reflection of the bigger chaotic harmonies that exist all around us.
From all of my lessons and life experiences, I feel that the very best thing I can do with my life and my love and my learning is to be honestly, truly, and completely me.  To follow the flow where it takes me, through overworlds and underworlds, and learn from everything that happens to me.  To acknowledge all my sides and potentials and understandings and respect it all for the broadness of view it brings.  To follow the thread of everything being connected to all it’s possible permutations.  To continue my endeavour to marry the worlds inside me and see their interconnection, and allow that interconnection and respect to translate itself through my touch and imprint on the cosmos.

And to smile, laugh, love, respect, acknowledge, honour, beautify, empathise, and inspire as much as I can.

Cause it's all me.

Money

I’m totally over the paradigm of money.  I’m over feeling like I need to have more of it, and telling people about my plans for it.  Of the things I do to get it, then the things I do and don’t do when I’ve got it, and the justifications I can create to absorb every purchase.  I’ve been trying to flog my gear for years, from tarot readings to handmade wands, from crocheting wearable art to writing…..and I’ve always got to this point. Where I’m sad, that for every beautiful thing I make or write, my first thought is about how to sell it.  Where I’m exhausted about the things I could, should, or would do, to make money from me doing what I love.  And disconcerted at the places I’m willing to go to raise a buck.  The faces I’m willing to wear.  The thoughts I’m prepared to swallow.  I don’t like what it stands for, the system it supports, and all the compromises I’ve made to get and keep it.  And maybe more to the point, I’m at a stage in my life where I feel like I can finally embrace my lack of it.
I want money to be a gentle drizzle that rains on me, from who knows where, that generally greases the cogs of my life without having to chase it, along with all the other gifts of time, love, or physical trade that rain on us all, to drive us in the life we need to live.  I want to surrender to my destiny and my passions, and most importantly my quest for true freedom and authenticity.  I want to just live in the eternal moment of chasing inspiration and deep thought, catching it sometimes or not at others, and being happy for where the chase leads me.
I don’t want to make custom items to fit particular desires.  I don’t want to make something just because it’s a good idea, and ‘it will sell’.  I don’t want to tie my creativity to any particular mooring, where I’ll feel an allegiance to a group, or a course, or a concept, or a client or anything at all except for endless curiosity.  I don’t want to have to be nice to you because you might give me money.  I don’t want you to wonder if I’m doing just that.  I don’t want to feel like I have a reputation to uphold.  Or a façade to support.  I don’t want to censor myself because I’m worried someone wont agree with me.  I don’t really want to teach anybody anything either.  I’m still far too much a seeker myself, to want to have that kind of responsibility.  I don’t want to set sail on the wild and random seas of the internet with the aim of increasing my network.  I don’t want to feel like every thought and entity I create has a price tag.  After all, it comes to me for free……
I don’t like what we collectively do when we’ve ‘bought’ something with money.  How do you really own idea’s and concepts?  How can you truly own a bit of soil that’s gone through billions of years of evolution, weather and experiences to lay under your feet?  How do you own the trees and the plants that have lived on that bit of soil for decades, that you uproot and disregard when they’re not the right sort, or in the right place, or giving you exactly what you want when you ‘own’ it?  How do you own a house and the memories and lifetimes and intense experiences that have happened within it over it’s lifespan?  And from before even, when it was in it’s raw forms on it’s way to being sculpted into a house?  And how do you own an animal, just because you’ve given someone pieces of paper that we collectively agree is money to them?  I’ll never forget one day driving near where I was living, and I saw a beautiful chestnut mare looking out from her paddock at me.  I had to stop and pat her, (not a common urge), and we KNEW each other.  I don’t know how or why or even how to describe it, but we just did.  I knew where to scratch her, and she hung her head against me and we snuggled.  I went back another day, to meet the man that ‘owned’ her, and asked him if I could buy his horse.  And while we were standing in his paddock on his land, his horse had her head over my shoulder, and nestled next to my cheek as she stood behind me, taking a moment now and then to nudge my hand for a pat, and he was telling me with a thunderous and confused look on his face about how much he loved her, trying desperately to make her come and stand with him, and telling me how connected they were, and how he was studying Pirelli with her and he really couldn’t sell her to me.  And me and her had nowhere to go with it, cause he ‘owned’ her.  I dunno.  Just seems weird you know?  She passed away a few months later………
And here’s where I’ll inject the disclaimer, cause I’m not saying that all these things are bad, and that the people who love wealth and abundance are corrupt, or that money shouldn’t be sought in return for skills, or anything at all about anything but me, and my life, and what I’m learning on this particular path I’m on.  All hail and glory be to all of our ways, and our tracings and searchings and the glimmering lights that are bringing us all home to the same place ultimately – the place of authentic, diverse, and multitudinously irrepressibly innumerable ways, in which we can all express our particular spark of the universe to our cores that are one.
I want to chase the numbers and ideas and inspirations that come into my head.  I want to make things regardless of whether they’re practical or not.  I want to like people that I like, and for them to know that it’s genuine.  I want to help people that feel drawn to ask me, as well as those that need it, and not have any transaction hanging over our heads.  I want you to know that regardless of what you see around you and the rumours you hear, I’m going to keep trying to be who I am.  I want to make the most of who and where I am now.  Making my own mistakes and learning my own lessons from them and prepared to be honest about all the aspects of it.
I want to make like a busker on the internet, and if you want to toss coins in my virtual hat, just do it.   I want to sell my books to you, with you knowing that the money will cover costs and with a bit straight to me, not diverted by marketing and editing and networking and managers and all the other bits in between.  And I want you to feel you can offer me a trade as well, commensurate to what my work is worth to you.  I also want to be able to give you stuff if I feel like it, and not have you feel like you owe me something.  And for us to have conversations about all the possible ways that this thing here next to me, can make it all the way next to you, with both of us feeling like we got an awesome exchange for our desires, as well as acknowledging that the ‘thing’ itself has a life and a destiny.  I want to keep feeling like I’m a conduit for creativity, and merely have to find the perfect match or matches for the things I write, and the yarns I spin, and the art that I make to be wearable.  And find that match based on how it feels, rather than who has money.
Because at the very best times of this journey without money and wanting to be discovered….I’ve realised that I’m actually there afterall.  With my most essential needs met.  And with not an army of people for to buy or appreciate my wares, but a small, ecclectic and comfortable covey of kindred spirits.  Who get what I write or what I do completely.  And love me for it.  And I know a lot of them, and have stories with them, and we keep in contact.  And they don’t agree with all of it, or they want to tell me added bits and I love that too.  The stretch and pull of attracting energies that can forge new relationships and ways of being.
I want to push off into a river of trust, surrender and destiny, knowing that what comes was always going to come, whether I chased it or not.  And accepting the lessons that have repeated themselves to me, at a whisper and a scream so often, I’ve lost count.  That the only truth is that there is no truth.  That the only thing that will never change, is that change will always happen.   And that to be consistently inconsistent is the only way for me to stay fully present in the moment, not being tugged at by past hurts or future worries.  And as a sneaky aside, no matter how much I try to avoid making mistakes, try to increase my knowledge to avert disaster, or worry about potential or historic trauma………the things that actually happen, the big whammo’s, have never ever been predictable, avoidable, or able to be scryed in a glass of the future.  I can only ever expect the unexpected.  And I’ve also learnt that whenever I say something like “How could they do that?” or “I’d never do that..”, I’m almost bound to experience something that will show me exactly how.
I want to be the one I’ve been waiting for.
For years now I’ve been waiting for someone to discover me, or want to manage me, or edit me, or tell me how to do it, or buy everything up, or offer me a contract, or buy me a home………and I’m over it.  Like waiting for a lover who never shows up.  Always existing in a state of what if’s, and when I’s, dreaming up the big wish list for all the things that we’d get and then get bored with, and that we probably don’t even need.  Cause in my experience, no matter how incredibly wonderful a thing may be, it’s never any comparison for the interactions, moments, stories and serendipities that can happen with red blooded people and life and entities.
When we’re chasing adventure, everything can seem like a warm magic touch of the divine.  I want to claim my lessons and life experience, and keep sculpting life like a creation, out of what I have and do right here and now.  I want to keep pondering the big ones of life, and investigating people, and our world, and our universe, and the myriad lives we lead, and cruising happily with my whole tribe of a family, as we keep exploring all the things that attract our attention.  And do my very best to be authentic to me.   While encouraging you to be authentic to you.
Money has been running along the side of my story for my whole life, and I feel like I’m only just starting to really value the threads that are interwoven with it, that are rich in colours and textures.  The threads of all the times that I’ve done something beautiful just because I wanted to.  That I’ve traded with someone and got far more than I thought it was worth.  That we’ve had no money and a friend has turned up and taken us all out for lunch.  And how lush that feels.  The times I’ve given something away and it felt amazing, and the times I’ve sold things and been miserable.  The byways that we’ve driven cause we’re not cashed up, and the people and stories that have come out of it.  The trading we’ve done that has created great stories.  The generosity of dear friends and complete strangers who gift us with all sorts of treasures.
The way we can pull up in Alice Springs and have a bunch of black fella’s coming up to ask us for two dollars or a cigarette, get distracted by our belly dancing coin draped bus, with kids tumbling round in it, and our handmade treasures that we travel with, and hear how we’ve just landed in town on a wing and a prayer, and then turn around to the others walking towards us and say, “Leave these fella’s alone, this mob are like us!”, and then talk about the places to go in town and where to get a feed.  Wouldn’t have met them or have that story if we’d pulled up in a spanking new four wheel drive looking swish.
Wealth can preclude you from certain life experiences.
The gypsy’s and the vagrants and the itchy footed folk can see shadows of themselves in our eyes, and we talk and swap tales and give each other resources for sailing through sedentary townships   Going to a homeless shelter for a soup kitchen feed when we’re strapped for cash.  Sitting with the folk we collectively place on the trash heap.  The ‘failed’ people.  Hearing their stories, and watching my baby be hugged by an alcoholic indigenous woman, who misses her grandkids.  Having a woman bring fruit and custard to the kids, and slip them some cordial, with a delighted smile on her toothless face as she witnessed the gusto and gratitude of our kids.  The activists who see kin in the outer plumage of us who aren’t mainstream, and share their stories and passions.
Turning up at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra, with our beaten up old Ford covered in peace messages, and money donated to us for petrol but nowhere to stay.  We’d come at night, and after meeting us, they welcomed us in with open arms, and Currawong was told “Women and kids first bro”.   They offered us tents and blankets, and when we told them we were sorted, they gave us a box of food, and found us somewhere to camp.  Later that night as we walked between the kitchen tent and our tent, we saw smoky spirits, dancing clear as a bell around the sacred fire that they always keep lit.  They were there but not there, and we watched them by the fire’s glow well into the night.   Pinching each other and affirming to each other that we were really seeing what we were.  When we told them the next morning, there was a sideways smile to us, as it was acknowledged that the ancestors often came to dance.
Starting a growers market on the dole, with no sponsorship or council collaboration, no business grants or paid wage, was a perfect way to be completely humble and honest with all our stallholders and market lovers.  We weren’t the proper ‘bosses’ or organisers that people expected, which meant they were happy to come along for the ride with no-one taking hierarchical control, being told what to do, or having rules to apply to.  We were all as important as each other.  And what a magical road of self acceptance that market became.
Not having lots of money has let us slip in unobserved, into so many lifestyles and groups and people’s homes.  Allowed us to witness the honour codes, camaraderie, and nobility often present in those that don’t have much more than their integrity, word, and heart to trade with.  And the incredible generosity shown by those that don’t have much.  Granny Crack cleaning the house that we ‘bought’ in Peterborough, and leaving us pumpkin soup for our first night there.  Being able to give a couple with kids their first house in Australia – our tent – as they were caught in the loop of not being able to get bits  of paper, cause they’d just immigrated, and not being able to get any money or jobs, cause they didn’t have the bits of paper.   Rocking up to  the oldest manmade structure on the  entire planet – the fish traps in Brewarrina – and having the women on one side of the gate talk to me, after a giggly admonishment about my dirty kids, welcome me to their land and the  fish traps, and invite me to go and have a look.  While Currawong was talking to the men on the other side of the gate, who did the same thing.  Getting invited to stay at a complete strangers house for the night, as it was getting cold and she didn’t want us to have to sleep in our van.  Pulling up drenched after an unsuccessful sleepover in town, van packed to the ceilings so there was no room to sleep, and being welcomed into the bus of the couple who were mentoring us with van travel.  “Don’t worry, you’re home now”, as they handed us a spliff, a hot cup of soup, and a game of chess while we dried.  Receiving a love letter, wrapped as a Christmas parcel from a beautiful midwife over the seas who wanted us to know that people ‘out there’ cared about us.  Getting books sent to me by fellow travellers cause I needed them.  Being the proud giftee of a splendid purple moo moo, in which to mooch around our home.
The incredible feeling I got when birthing Zarrathustra earlier than expected, and having the women of Nimbin do a whip around to dress him.  Living in the beautiful house that we do, and that we can’t afford, because the owners of it liked us, and let us do an energy exchange for the bit we can’t afford.  And the relationship that has ensued from them thinking with their hearts, and us appreciating it, and how inappropriate the term ‘landlords’ seem to this sweet couple who effortlessly and trustingly let us into their lives because we needed them, and that was more important to them than money (which they could have used).  Every time they sprinkle love on us when we meet, and swamp us with hugs, I think of all this, and am greatful to be reminded of the unexpected ways we can be loved and looked after.  And hopefully give back to the people who give to us.  Our new found beautiful friend who organised a welcome party for us by the pool, asking people to bring the stuff that they didn’t need anymore to help us furnish our house and clothe our kids.  The people we met, and the generosity and immensity of spirit shown, is so much more valuable to me than what the experience would have been like, if we could have paid for everything we wanted and needed.
Things like, we all walk into a café in Norwood one evening, and looking like the bedraggled fairies we can often come across as, the Greek ladies behind the food warmer instantly fell for us, and our charming brood.  While Balthazar was tossing hats with bemused tourists, and Spiral-Moon was talking fashion with the clubbers, the owner met Max and Merlin and the rest of us, and kindly gave us all drinks.  But unbeknownst to him, his working ladies had snavelled all the leftovers, and made us chips, and after ordering two fellafel rolls, we walked out with drinks and two stuffed bags full of food, and I was slipped a bag of hot chips with a wink as we headed out the door.  Enough lasagne for two days.
When I was birthing Max and Merlin, and Merlin wasn’t coming, the beautiful and sought out Russell and Alison came and saved our bacon with Ayurvedic massage.  It was part of a deep felt commitment they have to people and their healing and how glad they are to share it.  And we really needed them.  So they came.  Money didn’t even enter the room.
Many of these things wouldn’t have happened if we were walking around well heeled, looking like everyone else, and having the money to buy the goods and spaces that we thought we needed and wanted.  We’ve never been destitute, never starved, never gone without, never had nowhere to sleep, never been without ample delicacies and comforts for our spirits and bodies, and when there was a dearth of them, we learned valuable lessons.  And appreciated them all the more afterwards.
And there’s nowhere left to fall.  The fear that keeps many people in jobs they hate, relationships that diminish them, and occupations that compromise their spirit and passion, is the fear of having nothing.  Of the unknown.  Of not being able to pay the bills and meet outside requirements.  Well guess what…… we’ve been there.  And it’s really not all that bad!  Angels in human form have always been there to catch us.  It’s nice to know that it’s doable.  Not just that, but the resourcefulness, trickiness, quick thinking, loop hole searching and nimbleness, required to keep floating through freedom and gratitude in trying situations, is pure gold.
We can also mucky muck with the rich and cultured, who usually manage to politely not notice our eccentric clothing and tattered garments.  There was this story I heard bout a black man in America who was the editor of a rich, white, luxury cigar magazine.  He was asked how the hell he could be a black man and the editor of such a tome, considering who he was.  And he rather kindly explained that he was eminently qualified, because as a ‘slave’ in the white man’s culture, he had to know his master intimately.  How to gauge his moods, how to sidestep his anger, how to stay unnoticed, how to read the signs.  Whereas the master doesn’t need to know anything about his slave.  He comes when he’s called, does what he’s told, and that is that.  This story was applied to women and men with the men as masters and women as slaves when I heard it.  But I think it could equally be applied to those that are masters, and have all the money in our culture with money as god, and those that are slaves in the search for money, and the willingness to adapt to get it.  Us slaves who are searching for ways to get money in the land of money gods, have to know about the getting of it intimately.  Or be prepared to push off from the shore of needing it.
In the absence of money, and all the toys and gadgets on our kids wish list, they play with an empty pink storage container, and they’re all horses except for Griffyn who’s the vet, and he feeds them puffed corn and rice as medicine, and puts garlic poultices on their wounds.  They draw and talk and make up games and make swords out of sticks, and make them into guns with gaffa tape, and play in the far ranging playgrounds of imagination.   When we don’t have money we take the kids to the Hari Krishna’s for a free feast.  We take them on drives and stop at random parks.  They get hours of amusement from getting trucks to honk at them, as they drive onto a ferry while we picnic by the river.  They meet the most incredible people with stories to tell them from all walks of life, and all different age groups (Balthazar’s favourite creatures at the moment are teenage girls….)  We read them lots of books and make up stories when we’ve read them all.  We devour museums and art galleries and libraries and free and public events.  We hang out at the free pool in Nimbin and swap stories with colourful folk.  We visit others homes and lifestyles and learn from what we see.  We make a town and sea cove out of sticks and bark and leaves and grasses.  We paint the water tank with charcoal and mud.  We’ve worked out how to replace experience for money.
And we have empathy from experience, that so many people who have been immune to the greater indignities of lacking money, can skip.  Being in other peoples spaces with other peoples rules.  Having money or lack of it making choices for us that we wouldn’t choose out of mutual freedom.  Feeling like outcastes and fringedwellers.  Going against the mainstream.  Walking down the street with people watching us suspiciously.  So many more things we can understand in ourselves and other people, as we’ve been there.
And when we strike it rich and the dollars drift like butterflies from the heavens, man oh man do we know how to live it up!  It’s all the sweeter for it’s rarity.  We indulge ourselves like children, which most of us are, and savour our treats.   It means so much more as a rare event than it would if it was an affordable luxury.
I remember once reading someone’s philosophy of having ‘just enough’.  And how it kept a freedom of the spirit, and a lack of clutter.  An honest heart with compassionate tendancies.  Not enough to hoard, squander, or feel superior about, so a constant cycle of give and take instead.
On the streets of Nimbin, I see people carving unique relationships with money and their lives, and what they can do in order to work with it.  There’s a fella who paints amazing artworks around potholes as a metaphysical, spiritual, and practical duty to fellow travellers.  He wants to simply show people where the potholes are, so they can choose to go through them or not.  And he leaves little canisters with love hearts on them all round the area, letting people know what he’s doing, so they can choose to donate him money and support him.  He doesn’t want to know who, and he doesn’t want to know why, he’s just wrapped that enough money ends up in those canisters for him to make a living from what he loves.  There’s another rather dashing and smiley fella, who cleans the streets of Nimbin with his big tongs and bucket, as an honourable exchange of energy that he decided on himself, in return for being generously supported by the Government in the form of payments.    And they’re just the tip of the iceberg, for the creative relationships folk have contracted with money around here.
And all this outburst was spurred by reading my mate Richard's facebook discussion about money.  And how much he’d like to see it replaced by a gift economy, where between all of us giving each other stuff, we all get what we need.  And in honour of his decision to pursue this aim, he’s given away the photographing of two weddings as a gift.  I love that.  He wrote….
“Anyway, it takes a lot to talk about it all, but the essence of the change is a world where we give to each other, instead of one where we trade or try and make a profit. It's an entirely and radically different system that takes a whole new mindset in order to be able to work. Some people talk about trade as a new system, but it isnt really a new system because trade is essentially what we already do, it's just that we do with an abstract element inbetween that we call money. Furthermore the new system isn't really a system anyway, because it is not a state of mind that can be implemented by enforcement. The desire to give can only come internally and can only be done alone. In an attempt to try and start living this way I have given away two weddings so far this year, but that's only a very tentative start by myself. The essence of the idea is: In a world where we all give to each other, there is no want, except that of helping others. We wouldn't have to worry about ourselves, because the rest of the world would be doing that for us. It's pretty much the opposite system to what we have now, where all of us look out for ourselves and try to ensure our own welfare and those closest to us as our main priority. In a world of giving, instead of life being based on a basic fear of not being able to survive and have the things we want, our reason for working is to ensure the welfare of others. There is no room for the idea of 'profit' in this way of being, except the profit of being happy and living in a world of peace.”
I’d like to see money back in it’s box, as one of many possible ways of trading and exchanging goods and services.    As one of many options that a seeker can pursue to create the life they want.  And after saying all this, I believe I’ve also made peace, and come to terms with my relationship to money, and my place on the sliding scale of having it.  If a whole bag of it was to fall in my lap, it wouldn’t go to my head.  I know some places where it would be most welcome.  And it will most likely occur in a totally random way that I never would have dreamed of, if the time is ripe for me to learn some different lessons.
I feel like in writing this, I’ve actually written a hate letter to money that became a love letter afterall.  I’m gonna claim my money baggage.  And I love it.  I love that it’s kept itself in the wings all these years (and I haven’t even started with the stories, let me tell you) so I learnt so many juicy knowings and warm memories and stories.  And I love that it appears when I really need it.  And I love the creative ways in which it can come about.  I also love the absence of it, and the thought that we’re moving with a snowball into an evolving consciousness, that see’s the beauty in absolutely everything.  I love what the lack of it teaches me.  And I’m willing to let it call it’s own shots, like I’m trying really intensely to let everything do……and come and go as it will.  Cause I know now that wherever I find myself on the sliding scale of money, I’ve got the tools to deal with it, and the faith to trust that I’ll never get dropped.
And I guess that ultimately, I’ve been describing what a flowmad is.  And I can, because afterall I made the word up myself.   To flow in a nomadic way throughout having, and not having, believing and not believing, and whatever destiny the fates throw at me, knowing that there’s always a way to endear it, and respect it, and accept it, and learn from it, if I just keep travelling in my thoughts and my heart and my life for a respectful way to do it…..whatever it may be.

Future Visions

Many moons ago, we were living in a sleepy village of the Adelaide Hills, and we’d just started our market.  The war had broken out in Iraq, and we drove our old Ford with hundreds of statements of peace written on it as a mobile petition to Canberra…………  And that time was almost like a mini Summer of Love.  All sorts of folk from all the stratospheres of our culture came to our market and got loved.  It almost became a cult how loving our market was.  It was a standard of care that we had for everyone who chanced upon us on sunny or stormy Sundays, no matter who they were or how they looked. As the top of the supposed hierarchy of the market, Currawong and I had a unique opportunity to give the power to everybody.  And turn it into a circle, where everyone was loved and appreciated no matter how obnoxious they were.  People came and attacked us, and died with us, and sneered at us, and fought in front of us, and generally brought some of their worst behaviours to the commons, and we all just loved them and us and it, and did our best to treat everyone as equals.  People also came with their best and their most eccentric and generous and trippy and vulnerable behaviours and we loved them even more.  And I’d love to keep going as I’m sure you can tell, but the market is not really part of the story I want to tell.  It was an amazing time and I’ll write about that another day, but for the purposes of this story, there was a particular event that really changed and challenged my perception of the world.

There was this fella who’d been a hermit for about 15 years.  And he chose the market as the place to come out and play with people again, and he decided to organise a meeting for peace.  Because he’d been a hermit for 15 years he really didn’t have a huge social network, and as it was a small town, not many people turned up.  So there we were early one evening, Currawong and I, the ex-hermit and another friend, sitting in a chilly hall to talk about peace.  The first thing he asked was what peace was.  And we very quickly realised that all we knew about peace, was what was absent from it. We knew all the things that peace wasn’t, and when there weren’t any of them around, then that would have to be peace.  We were looking at the photo negatives of peace, rather than looking at the colour photo. And then we started wondering……..if we didn’t know what peace WAS…….then how the hell could we create it?  And how much have we collectively created all our own hell and strife, with our focus on all the things that peace isn’t, so that we can have it?

So many of us spend our precious creative energy on all the things that are wrong with the world, and each other, and the government, and corporations, and Monsanto, and our modern day diets, and the list is endless of all the things that we’re trying to stop for the good of us, and the planet, and those poor children, and the people over there, and if we all just do the right things and stop doing the wrong things, then it will all get better and we’ll all be happy……………..  In fact we’re so focused on educating ourselves and each other about all the wrong things with the world, that we’ve forgotten that we’re creating it all with our thoughts, and forgotten too, that maybe one of the most liberating, enlightened, revolutionary and loving acts we can ever perform, is that of creating magic with our thoughts and our minds, and in the creative energy of dreaming a positive, peaceful, respectful, honourable, honest and healthy future.  And present reality.

Now I really got into the more creative aspect as environmental activism, after watching The Secret, and feeling despairing and disempowered after watching An Inconvenient Truth.  I came up with all sorts of ideas to create a more positive focus for our collective futures.  Planting hemp along the roads, and in any spare place, to soak up carbon dioxide and be turned into paper, neo plastic, and all the gazillions of things hemp can be made into.  Creating public focus walls, with folk and groups and schools doing tiles of all the wonderful things they wanted in the future world. When we were school shopping years ago, we spent time at a Maharishi school, where they had a whole wall dedicated to what the kids wanted to see more of in the world, and they meditated on it every morning.  There was more rain, reforestation, safe biosphere, and all the other sorts of things that make a person feel good thinking about.  I also wanted to try and write about it, and create a positive future vision rather than the more easily available apocalyptic horror stories, that are put about in mainstream media as possible futures.

Growing up in an apocalyptic fundamentalist cult, I’ve been thinking about ‘the end days’ for most of my life.  Even after leaving my childhood religion, I came across channellers, and mystics, and talk about the ‘great wave of consciousness’ and all the 2012 conspiracies.  And now we’re here.  And the most curious thing has happened!  I’ve always contemplated a future after ‘the shit hit the fan’ as being mostly agrarian based.  Primitive.  No electricity or technology.  Hard work.  And Currawong’s been having this love affair with science, and in the last couple of months, for the first time ever in my life, I’ve been dreaming of a future after whatever shift is on it’s way has happened, with science and technology and a quasi mystical science, that creates things based on cohesion and harmony with the environment rather than money.  Sustainability rather than greed.

And I wrote this thing years ago in the period I was just talking about, and revisited it lately, and found myself adding technical bits to it, and it felt goodJ  I want to keep having my internet love affairs after ‘the shift’.  I want to keep being able to travel in freedom.  I want abundance and gardens and flying machines and funky earthship style homes and little pockets of communities where anything that people can dream up as a lifestyle can be lived respectfully.

So here’s what I wrote years ago with some added bits……

The earth is me.  Microcosm’s of macrocosm’s abound.  Remember that model in the 60’s who asphyxiated slowly to death when they painted her skin?  We were doing that to the earth before.  Before we realised that we’d created it through our fear and pain that we really were seperated from all that we saw.  Before we realised that we were creating it all, and could simply take our attention away from our complete and total destruction, and instead create a happy, joyful, peaceful, greatfull reality with our thoughts.  Pull up the concrete and the hard building scabs on our skin and let our skin breathe.  Isn’t it funny that most of the most watered and fertile land on the planet was covered with concrete and bitumen.  Before we realised.  Before we pulled it up and travelled back along the yarn to the times when we moved around a lot, owned few and well loved things, took care of the earths skin like our own.  Before we realised that all the gentle metaphors the many prophets, seers and poetesses had given us were literal advice stories and instructions to living a better life.  Isn’t it wonderous and lushsome that we all collectively got it.  Got our oneness.

Flowmads made their artistic ways throughout the countryside and cityscape, pulling some of the scabs off our skin, letting the white and shriveled parts of our flesh see the sunlight again, breathe the blue skies, grow weeds then flowers then fruits in our flesh again.  Wherever they went they left green ground and tent sites, sunbreathing shelters and coloured flags, lush gardens and freebreathing trees.  They also left life enhancing sculptures and weavings and sounding pieces that aged along with everything else.

When all the human animals remembered their animal selves and stopped being tamed lions pacing round their cages, they took up the artistic, shamanic, and percussive arts, telling stories and leaving inspirations.  They all started pulling up the scabs in whichever ways they could.  Peeling back the hard encrusted beliefs and bitumens and crumbling ways.

They started birthing in colourful tents and underground grottoes, cool river pools and warm salty baths.  Their births became ecstatic and orgasmic, private moments of a families deep connection and love for each other.  Babies were welcomed into the world gently and quietly, being left to acclimatise in whatever way they needed and their families felt drawn to.  A soft lit, easy slide into life and awareness outside the womb.  A simple instruction into the arts of birthing human animals. And safe and respectful medicines and procedures sat quietly in the wings, in case they were needed.

Their sexuality was allowed to express the myriad of ways and paths imagined by the unique collective consciousness, and understood as ways that the universe had found to express itself.  Everyone’s sexual journey was seen as increasing and improving compassion and empathy for the vast sea of possibility that is sex.

Death became far less traumatic, as we made it more part of life.  We formed elaborate and soulful rituals around letting go, washing and dressing the body, singing and playing music and telling final stories.  Carrying the dead around the places at home they liked best, and then burying them in the gentle folds of the earth, and planting tree’s on them, so we could always eat fruit from the tree and know that we were eating of the essence of our loved ones.

We realised we were all one literally with the cosmos, our planet, other animals, each other, and ourselves.  Everything we did, we did to ourselves.  And we created it all with our thoughts.  We started creating a beautiful, unified, loving, greatful, diverse, respectful wholeness.  A healing for us all as a planet and everything.  Letting the waters and ourselves flow.

Because we’re all made up of mostly water, and we drink it, swim in it, bathe in it, eat it, use it and love it, as it carries memories of all the places it’s been. Water and energy, that moves and flows constantly.  For whom stagnation is death.  Water and energy that is affected, changed by, and remembers thoughts and where it’s been.    Water and energy that’s melted into our atmosphere from interstellar journeys, bringing knowledge and memories and connectings with us and our water already flowing.  Water and energy that travels an 8 million year cycle of plunging into the depths of our earths heart, and then floating up to the seabed again through hydrothermic vents.  Water and energy that remember being locked in rooms to make bargain goodies.  Water and energy that are a constant flow of stories and memories and learnings to be heard whenever we want.  Water and energy that contain the ingredients for everything.  And who respond most of all to love and gratitude.

We became flowmads and caretakers, and whatever else we wanted, and we lost all the baggage that politer religions suggested we leave behind, as we started living the reality that everything around us is us.  What constructions did we like on our skin?  What elements did we want in our water and blood?  What did we want to do with our fertile valleys and shores that begged to have food grown from them?  How did we thank and love the other animals, our brothers and sisters and diverse parts of self, who provided so much for us?

We told ourselves the truth about how our ownership had become a burden, and we relinquished our burdens for the flow.  We strived to retrieve our animal natures, our noble sovereign natures, and placed ourselves back in the wheel of equals.  We set up Human Animal Wildlife Sanctuaries…….where human animals can just be.  Can remember what it feels, looks, sounds and tastes like when life is lived in bliss, being simply who we are.  Putting love, thanks and respect into our food, our clothing, our habitats, our water, our families, our lovers, our children.  All of us animals living cohesively, respectfully, co-operatively, lovingly together.

And then we met together with all the other animals and traded, and played, and danced, and sung, and created community together.  Created the magic of community that gave form to our glimmering dreams of sharing tasks and learnings.  Community where there was room for everyone, and everyone was loved and thanked for the unique magic they brought to the whole.  Where we understand that what we focused on we got more of.  And the best and most fertile ground for this community to grow in was the bed of a market.  Spontaneous, fertile markets that erupted from daily living and life around the areas we cohabitated, or on the trails of flowmads.

Technology exploded into radical places when we got rid of the money god from our psyches and explored and invented for the good of all.  We searched the depths of the deep deep seas and found the secrets down below.  We sent off crafts to the outer reaches of our galaxy and beyond, exploring our neighbouring life forms.  Sky craft became our motorized mode of travel, avoiding the need for highways, cutting out completely the toll of dead animals taken by roads, and freeing up our means of travel.    Run on water and built with hemp and recycled parts, they revolutionized the way we move.  Solar, wind and water power became the standard, and our esteemed spiritual scientists worked out myriad ways of cleaning up the messes our ancestors created.  Our homes became far more natural, nestled into hills for insulation, passively solar and well placed for growing gardens within, on top, and without.

And we collectively grew up, married the matrifocal mother to the patrifocal father and welcomed their learnings from the lengths and breadths of where we’d been in our evolution.  We all woke up from our self induced coma, and recognised that the time for change was now, and we really were the ones that we were waiting for all along.  We’ve explored the far reaches of human potential, and now it’s time to meet up again, take notes, and put it all into perspective as we evolve into an age of enlightenment, love, thanks, and consciousness.  We all knew the toll, deep down, that our greed and hungry culture has taken on ourselves and our earth.  And we made the changes necessary to make it a whole lot easier not only for ourselves, but for all of our brothers and sisters. We take responsibility for shaping the world as we want it and need it to be for a long, healthy and happy future for us and many many generations to come.
